Books Read & Reviewed: Oct. - Dec. 2008

October

The Secret Life of Josephine: Napoleon's Bird of Paradise by Carolly Erickson
Historical fiction
The author has a good writing style and I did learn a lot about Josephine...I had no idea she was actually from Martinique. I expect dialogue to be created in these, but I was not thrilled with the author creating events.

A Year in Provence
by Peter Mayle
Non-fiction

I loved this book. It was so fun to read. An English writer and his wife have vacationed in Provence for years when they pursue their dream and buy a house there. This is the account of their first year living in France. It is so witty and charming to read. Adapting to this new lifestyle leads to many discoveries and mishaps. One of the unique aspects was the extensive discussion of food and wine. Everything in his locale is lead by the stomach--and boy do they eat (and drink!)
sidenote: Russell Crowe's 2006 movie "A Good Year" was based on this book.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J.K. Rowling
Fiction
I find new tidbits every time I read this. I am trying to find a copy of the original and re-read it that way--orginal English wording and title (Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone).

Toujours Provence by Peter Mayle
Non-fiction
His first book was a month by month account of their new life in France. This is more a series of stories or vignettes of the people they meet and the places they go. I loved it like the first.

Angela and the Baby Jesus by Frank McCourt
Non-fiction
From the famous author of "Angela's Ashes" comes a story about a true experience from her childhood. In Catholic Ireland, little Angela is sad to see the baby Jesus in the crib is not covered with a blanket. Surely he is cold and she takes him home to warm him up. The attitude of the little girl and the parish priest is touching and sweet. The mother's behavior is less warm and weirdly superstitious. I was going to buy this book for my daughter this Christmas but I'm glad I checked it out first.

No Room at the Inn by Melody Carlson
Fiction
A very light, sweet novel about a B & B that opens up for Christmas. Their guests include a wide range of people including the eccentric, mysterious Myrtle and a very pregnant young woman and her husband that sleep in their bus because there's no room at the inn...see where this is going??

The Light at Tern Rock by Julia L. Sauer
Fiction
This is actually a early chapter book so it took about an hour to read. Also a Newberry Honor book.
Aunt Martha and her nephew agree to man the lighthouse at Tern Rock for two weeks, but get stranded there during Christmas.
